Public invited to explore the Places, Spaces and Faces of Albany
Albany, NY -March 29-The Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center, Historic Albany Foundation and Historic Cherry Hill are sponsoring the 6th Annual Albany History Fair on Sunday, May 1st from Noon to 4:00 p.m. The fair will be held at the Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center, located at historic Quackenbush Square at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Broadway in Albany. The fair is open to the public and most activities are free or carry a modest charge. There is also ample free parking behind the Visitors Center.
Places, Spaces and Faces of Albany is the theme of this year's fair that highlights an exhibit by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany
A photography exhibit by students from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany's ImageMakers Program provides the theme for this year's fair. Visitors to the fair will be able to view photographs featuring the people and places of the City (on view through May 31), and will explore the theme further through a variety of tours and activities.
Historic Ten Broeck Triangle
Historic Albany Foundation will have people on hand at St. Joseph's Church throughout the fair to give visitors a peek inside, and architectural historian Anthony Opalka will give a walking tour of the Ten Broeck Triangle neighborhood. The Albany County Historical Association will also host its Living History Day at Ten Broeck Mansion during the fair.
Fun and Games
At the Visitors Center, numerous historical organizations will have exhibits, activities and displays highlighting the rich heritage of the region, including the Albany Institute of History & Art, New York State Capitol, New York State Museum, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, Underground Railroad History Project, Old Songs and the USS Slater. Visitors will also enjoy music, 19th century games such as rolling hoops, graces and Jacob's ladder, and might choose to go on a "splashdown" with the Albany Aqua Ducks or take a pony ride offered by Albany Carriage Service. Hands-on activities for children will be available including educational information about the natural environment of the Hudson River. Students from the Boys & Girls Club/Ida Yarborough will re-enact historic figures of Albany.
Dozens of area restaurants, retailers and attractions have donated generous gifts and gift certificates for the popular "Albany's Big Dig" raffle. For $5, visitors can dig for one of the great prizes. All proceeds from this and other fee based activities at the fair will support the educational mission of Historic Cherry Hill.
3rd Annual Sense of Place Awards
The three fair sponsors will also present the 3rd Annual Sense of Place Awards at the fair. These awards honor and celebrate the historic treasures and the people, places and events that make Albany unique. Each honoree will receive an award of recognition, which will be presented at the Fair's awards ceremony at 3:45 p.m.
