DESCRIPTION:As the weather heats up\, cool down with us at the Pommer for an Ice Cream Social! \nThis free event will be held at the Pommer from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Thursday\, July 31st\, 2025. The best way to beat the heat and see some cool art is to join us at the Pommer for an Ice Cream Social and a chance to view The World of James Knapp and hear a little about the history behind the show. This program was created in collaboration with the Pommer Building at 153 South Pearl Street and combines art\, history\, and\, well\, Ice cream to create an engaging and fun event for the entire family. \n

SUMMARY:William James Knapp: A Concert and Lecture Exploring Music of The Black Experience During the Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:$25 Early Bird; $30 after May 4th \nThis talk and musical program will feature music from William James Knapp’s extensive personal collection of sheet music he acquired between 1865 to 1885\, which includes popular\, classical\, and parlor music from the Gilded Age.\nJames was the great-grandchild of Dinah Jackson\, the last person enslaved at Cherry Hill. After his mother died\, James became a ward in Richard Van Rensselaer’s household in Albany\, N.Y. where he worked as a butler for the family. James later worked as a musician\, a sales clerk at Hideley’s Music Store\, a hospital porter and a nurse. James lived at Cherry Hill for about sixteen months between 1880 and 1884.  \nDr. Chrisopher Brellochs\, speaker\nLayVon Scott\, baritone\nDr. Elizabeth Gerbi\, piano  \nDr. Brellochs was a music consultant to Historic Cherry Hill for their exhibition\, “The World of William James Knapp.”  \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:The 26th Annual Albany History Fair: The World of James Knapp: Black Life in Gilded Age Albany
DESCRIPTION:This event is FREE and open to the public. \nJoin us at the 26th Annual Albany History Fair\, and explore Black life in Gilded Age Albany through the lens of James Knapp\, one of Cherry Hill’s Black residents\, and through the many stories interpreted by Albany’s cultural organizations. There will be special tours\, period music\, scholars’ talks\, exhibits by heritage and community partners\, and the opening of The World of James Knapp\, an art show featuring original works by local Black artists responding to James Knapp’s story.  \nCome hear James Knapp’s sheet music collection come to life with a live performance\, view the objects and letters that he left behind\, or sit down to play dominoes or make paper dolls\, like James and his sister would have done when they grew up in Albany.\nPresented in partnership with the Underground Railroad Education Center. \nPresentations: \n12:30: Dr Kori Graves\, Associate Professor of History at the University at Albany\, will present I\, Too\, Am Albany: James Knapp and His Context. \n1:30: Dr. Christopher Brellochs with baritone LayVon Scott and pianist Dr. Elizabeth Gerbi will present James Knapp: Music of The Black Experience During the Gilded Age\, a mini concert and talk. \n2:30: Paul & Mary Liz Stewart\, founders of the Underground Railroad Education Center\, will present Black Life in 19th-Century Albany through the Lens of the Myers and Elkins Residences. \n3:30: Marcus Kwame Anderson\, Eisner Award-winning artist\, illustrator\, and cartoonist\, will moderate Interpreting the Life of James Knapp through Art\, a panel discussion with artists from The World of James Knapp exhibition. \nOngoing Activities: \nMusic by Carmen Lookshire \n19th-century toys\, games and crafts \nTours of Cherry Hill and The World of James Knapp art exhibition \nExhibits by Heritage & Community Partners
